The project foresees the construction of a new full steel structure with maximum plan dimensions of about 42×32 sqm and with a single floor of a maximum height of about 5 m. The structure is realized over the existing 80’s monoplane prefabricated building of the administrative headquarter.

The new structure is designed to be totally separated from the existing building in order not to load its structures. The new structure foresees two pairs of metal pillars each supporting one steel truss that would step over the existing building without resting on any of its elements.

The steel trusses are made of upper and lower struts with rectangular box section and diagonal circular-hollow sections fully welded in the workshop, and are connected on both floor and roof levels by IPE 500 sections and 200x500x16 mm box structures constituting the support structure for corrugated metal sheet and wooden panel system slabs. Joints intended to provide both a sliding surface and a hinge are on top of the pillars.

By the sliding support a visco-elastic device is set to enable slow movements, as those caused by thermal variations, and to behave as rigid support to dynamic actions (as those caused by seismic events). Such solutions avoid overloading the single pillar base section with undesired shear forces and bending moments caused by thermal variations that therefore are not conveyed to the deep foundations made of 5 CFA piles and a r.c. plinth for each pillar. In the central part of the building the existing internal courtyard’s imprint was kept and the whole external structure was fully faced with steel sun screen louvers.
