The Student Hotel Lavagnini is located in Florence, close to the center and overlooking the Fortezza da Basso gardens, bordered by tramway line 3. It was born from the conversion of the “Palazzo del Sonno”, at first guesthouse of the Government of Firenze Capitale, in the second half of the nineteenth century, which later became property of the Ferrovie dello Stato. The Student Hotel is a format already present in other European cities and differs from the other structures in being open to the city besides giving accommodation for students. It is characterized by a mix of international student residence, hospitality for tourists and workers, dedicated accessory services such as laundry, study and relaxation areas, communal kitchens, cinema, internal courtyard with bike service, and spaces open to the city, like a co-working, gym, rooftop pool with views of the Florence skyline and spaces dedicated to catering of various kinds.

The intervention, being a reconversion of a historical building of the second half of the nineteenth century, was based on a conservative restoration and the construction of new accessory volumes within the court. The new volumes are integrated with the morphology of the inner courtyard, creating differences in level between the floor of the courtyard itself, the terraces overlooking it and the glazed volumes. The internal courtyard, which can be used by all citizens, is therefore a unitary place with the functions that overlook it, creating a rough but fluid space between exterior and interior.
