The Nuovo Museo degli Innocenti is the living and current expression of an institution devoted to children starting from that February 5th, 1445 when the first abandoned child was welcomed in the Brunelleschi Hospital in Piazza Santissima Annunziata.

To this day the Istituto degli Innocenti has hosted facilities and activities that all share the same theme of childhood and families: nursery schools, shelters for children, an educational service for children and young people, a historical archive and a library.

The new museum has therefore given continuity and completeness to the structure, in relation to the rich cultural heritage inherited from the past and to what continues to be produced.
The project involved the new public accesses from the square through two doors, two metal mechanisms, the first extensible as a telescope, the second with variable geometry.

In addition, the design concerned the reorganization of the internal paths, both vertical and horizontal, the refurbishment, the reorganization and the enhancement of temporary and permanent exhibition spaces, the recovery of the large loggia on the top floor, once a drying rack for sheets and strips, for the construction of a new cafeteria with an incomparable view of the monuments of Florence, that can be closed by movable glass panels.
